Making Puck: To Be the Champ, You Have to Beat the Champs

Woooooo!

Despite a tough start to the season, the Anaheim Ducks of Anaheim served notice to the rest of the NHL that they are still a force to be reckoned with. The Ducks, with the help of a Sami Pahlsson shorthanded goal and three assists from Ryan Getzlaf, pounded the Red Wings 6-3. In the karmic justice department, the Ducks put Todd Bertuzzi on injured reserve with a concussion.

The Leafs can’t put it away. The Sabres score four times in the third period, and win it in overtime against the Leafs, who have given up two-goal leads in consecutive games. They must be using that “prevent” defense that’s so popular among NFL teams that enjoy losing leads late in games. Ales Kotalik scored with less than four seconds left in OT to give Buffalo the victory.

Joe Thornton is awesome. The Sharks superstar had a goal and two assists to power San Jose to a road win over the Canucks. Evgeni Nabokov had the win and an assist on a goal by Steve Bernier. Professional whiner Jeremy Roenick got back into action as well for the Sharks, and was promptly whistled for hooking. This allowed him to rest up so he could fit in that 6:36 of ice time.

  1. Correction: Bryan McCabe scored with less than four seconds left in OT to give Buffalo the victory.

  2. All that money he’s earning can’t buy McCabe a big enough rock to hide under today in Toronto.
