Not every team in the playoffs gets to hoist the Stanley Cup. Try as they may, 29 teams will end their hockey-related obligations without lifting the Holy Grail of Hockey. We here at MYFO encourage you to erase their substandard play from your collective memory, and join us in wishing them good luck on the golf course.
The Colorado Avalanche:
What Happened?: To put it mildly, the Avalanche were buried as they were swept by a far superior, faster and hungrier Detroit Red Wings team. The fact that Jose Theodore returned to form coupled with a rash of injuries and the Avalanche didn’t stand a chance.
Their Year in MYFO: We had some fun at the expense of Peter Budaj’s goalie mask, but for the most part any appearance by the Avalanche on MYFO revolved around the speculation regarding Peter Forsberg’s possible return, his indecisiveness on whether or not he was going to return at all and finally, how we ultimately grew tired of his shtick once he did return. Oh yeah, and we discussed how Colorado is full of old people.
The Silver Lining: I’m sure there are plenty examples of a silver lining when it comes to the Colorado Avalanche (the bright futures of young stars Paul Stastny and restricted free agent Wojtek Wolski come to mind), but that does not mean storm clouds are not looming on the horizon. Joe Sakic may not be back for a 20th season, which I’m sure will be devastating to Avalanche and former Nordiques fans alike. Peter Forsberg will almost certainly not be back unless everyone stops paying attention to him again. Throw in the fact that Jose Theodore, Andrew Brunette and Adam Foote are unrestricted free agents and Marek Svatos is one of six restricted free agents and the odds are that the roster will look much different for the Avalanche next fall.
