Not every team in the playoffs gets to hoist the Stanley Cup. Try as they may, 29 teams will end their hockey-related obligations without lifting the Holy Grail of Hockey. We here at MYFO encourage you to erase their substandard play from your collective memory, and join us in wishing them good luck on the golf course.
The New York Rangers:
What Happened?: Quite simply, the Penguins wore the Rangers down until they weren’t fit to compete. They battled back bravely in Games 4 and 5, most likely on little more than grit and determination, but the Penguins were absolutely the better team in this series.
Their Year in MYFO: The Staal brothers visited their Inner Fugitive. We found out that Hextall’s Mom really hates Scott Gomez. The Rangers get to open next season overseas. New York, against all odds, won the day that first Sunday in February. The Rangers not winning the Cup is good for America. Henrik Lundqvist debuted one of our most underrated features that will be used much more next season. Despite his differences with the team, Martin Brodeur made up for it after the series ended. Then, of course, there’s this.
The Silver Lining: Jagr, Drury, and Gomez are under contract. Take that for whatever its worth. Jagr’s on his last legs, if he comes back at all next year. Shanahan, Straka, and this guy are all unrestricted free agents. Lundqvist runs hot and cold, so either he needs to be solid for more than a week at a time, or he’ll need to be replaced. Fitting under the salary cap is going to be hard for the Rangers, especially with the Big Three up front. If they can resign their free agents, they might make another run at things. But, don’t count on it.
